Good news for those looking for a more traditional driver’s job. The British Columbia Trucking Association reports that British Columbia needs anywhere between 1000 and 4500 new truck drivers per year to keep up with rising demand and to replace those who retire or move on to other careers.

Trucking in Oceanside

Locally, trucking companies have had a tough time.  They have been hit with the downturn in forestry, and fishing, the rising cost of fuel, high ferry costs, and the financial crisis in the US that has slowed building and consequently the shipping of lumber.  Wayne Deal of Kingsley Trucking, Qualicum Beach says that it is a tough industry to be in at this time.  Kingsley Trucking, which has been around for over 30 years, employs three company drivers and has ten subcontractors that own and operate their own trucks.  Company drivers make about $52,000 per year, which is based on a percentage of what the trucks make.  Kingsley trucking is well established and will weather this financial storm but Wayne predicts that two or three of his competitors will likely go broke in the next year.  To give you an example Wayne says it costs $441 each way to send a truck on the ferry.  Yesterday he sent 6 trucks which cost $5000 in ferry fees alone.
His advice to new drivers looking for work is to look for   reputable companies that pay well and have good equipment.  If the equipment is in poor shape and the driver is pulled over for an inspection all the fines go on the driver’s license.  It is the driver’s responsibility to make sure the truck is in safe operating condition.
Kingsley Trucking likes their drivers to have a minimum of two years driving experience before they will hire them.  One of the best ways to get a good foundation is to work for a fuel company.  Fuel companies are safety conscious, they provide extra training and they are usually unionized so they pay well.

Training Options

There are many driver training schools that advertise Class 1 with Air endorsement.  As always the situation is “buyer beware” and “you get what you pay for”.  Take the time to research the schools and find the one that best suits your needs and creates the greatest likelihood of employment for you.  The following are just some of the schools that you may want to consider.
MTI Mountain Transport Institute Ltd.
North Thompson Driving School
Parkway Driving Academy
Cowichan School of Motoring
North Shore Driving School Truck Division

Getting Started

If you are unemployed and considering training, call the Career Centre at (250) 248-3205 and make an appointment to speak to an Employment Consultant to see if there are any funding opportunities that may help defray your training costs.  For example if you are a recently laid off forestry worker the government of British Columbia has recently expanded the programs covered by the Community Development Trust to include truck driving schools.
